An update has been announced on a possible Downton Abbey movie.

'Downton Abbey' Actor Reveals What He'll Miss The Most When Series Ends

Rumors have been circulating for a while now on whether a feature film based on the British drama will ever happen. On Saturday, TV Line discovered the status on that at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills when executive producer Gareth Neame gave a small bit of hope.

"There is this speculation about whether we'll make a Downton movie," Neame said. "We might. It's something we've talked about."

The producer would definitely be happy if a film eventually got made, but nothing is official yet.

"I think a Downton movie would be a wonderful thing," he said. "But we don't have a script or a plan as of yet."

Hugh Bonneville, who plays Robert Crawley on the series, admitted that no one expected the show to go on for as long as it will.

"We were all expecting to finish after Series 5," he said. "[Creator] Julian [Fellowes] said he felt it would feel a bit truncated, so he asked if we would do another nine episodes."

Neame also explained why it's probably not a good idea to keep the series going all the way through the stock market crash in 1929- four years after the sixth season.

"If we'd gone to a Season 7 or 8, we probably would have taken it that much further," he said. "I don't know if I could bear to see [Robert Crawley] go through a financial disaster."

The sixth and final season of Downton Abbey will premiere in the United States on Sunday, January 3 on PBS.
