Following a deadly shooting at a Louisiana movie theater last month during a screening of her film Trainwreck, comedian Amy Schumer is taking a stand for tighter gun control laws.

Alongside her cousin, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer from New York, the comedian and actress held a press conference August 3 where the two introduced a plan to tighten gun control laws and make it more difficult for violent criminals and the mentally ill to obtain weapons.

"I wanted to take this opportunity to explain how I feel, and also support this push for better, more sensible gun control laws," she said. "We're here today to say enough is enough to mass shootings in our schools, our college campuses, our military bases, and even in our movie theaters."

During their conference, the two cited the shooting at a Lafayette, Louisiana movie theater July 2 during a showing of 3. The shooting saw two female victims die, 21-year-old Mayci Breaux, and 33-year-old Jillian Johnson. The gunman, later identified as John Russell Houser, who reportedly suffered from mental problems, then killed himself. His gun was purchased legally.

The comedian, as well as her co-star John Cena, both took to Twitter after learning of the shooting to express their sorrow over the events.

As a part of the legislation, states which submit all necessary records into the background check system would receive monetary rewards, while those that did not would be given penalties. Senator Schumer also said during the conference that he would call on Congress to preserve mental health funding and substance abuse programs.
