The second season of True Detective has been nothing but a twisted mystery that somehow seems to have more curveballs than a top major league pitcher-but it may still be possible to figure out who exactly committed the crime that set off the season's long investigation ahead of the show's 90-minute season finale on August 9.

How Woodrugh's Death Changes Everything

A lot of clues and people have been thrown at fans throughout the season, causing endless amounts of confusion as it seemed that more questions were being left unanswered, and more plot points that seemed to have nothing to actually do with the case were tossed in. But, now, things may finally be clearing up about what exactly happened-and just what everyone will be exposed as when it comes to their crimes.

Here's the official run-down that may actually complete the entire mystery-and solve Caspere's murder:

How The Prostitution Angle Blew The Case Wide Open

Everything starts with the murder of Ben Caspere, the Vinci city planner who was involved with Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn) on an upcoming rail deal. When he died, he appeared to have swindled Frank out of $5 million of his money. Later on a photo of some rare blue diamonds which may have been in his possession comes into play.

Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch) investigates the diamonds, and learns Teague Dixon, who was also previously working the case until he was killed during a shoot-out was also looking into them. The pieces are eventually put together that they were robbed from a jewelry store during the 1992 LA riots, , which saw the store's owners murdered. Woodrugh also learned that Dixon, Lt. Kevin Burris, and Police Chief Holloway were all working in the jewelry store's district at the time of the robbery-leading Woodrugh, Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) and Velcoro (Colin Farrell) to determine they likely worked together.

The working theory then extends to the possibility that the group stole the diamonds and Caspere helped move them, with the money they got for them going to Mayor Austin Chessani, giving them all a place in Vinci's new corrupt power structure.

However, the jewelry -store robbery saw the couple's kids orphaned. Now, one of them as an adult, has been identified-Caspere's assistant, 'Erica.'

Other notable events that have occurred have been the deaths of State Attorney Katherine Davis, as well as Woodrugh, who was shot in the back by Burris after a blackmail scheme by Holloway failed to take him down.

Overall the two most likely potential culprits (when factoring in who could have fit in the outfit and brid mask the person who shot Velcoro with riot bullets used way back) are either 'Erica's' brother-who is still unaccounted for, or Burris.
