Britain's Got Talent contestant Bailey McConnell may be turning into a successful hit in the music business, but his life wasn't always so splendid.

Talking Dog Chatter On 'Britain's Got Talent'

On Friday, Birmingham Mail shared an emotional interview with the 16-year-old who became a popular contestant on the British reality competition. He is releasing a single called "Crystallise" on September 11th, which looks back on a dark time in his life.

"I went through a tough time at the start of secondary school when I was bullied," McConnell said. "I was about 11 and I got really down about it although now I look back and think, 'Why did I get myself in such a state?' It was awful at the time, a lot of name calling and I wasn't strong enough not to mind. It got inside me. I thought the only way out for me was to not be here anymore."

Fortunately for the singer, it was music that helped him move through this challenging era. He also had loved ones around to help him get stronger.

"I got through it by talking to my family and through songwriting. I got my first guitar for Christmas 2012," he said. "I've turned that negative experience into a positive one by writing a song about it. I used to dwell on it all the time but now I've found an outlet for my feelings. It always makes me emotional when I sing Crystallise as it describes my most troubled time and has the most meaning to me."
