Gibbs (Mark Harmon) will basically go through hell during the premiere episode of the 13th season of NCIS.

In the last season he was shot and that's how the season ended so now he must be operated on in order to save his life.

Jon Cryer will portray the doctor (Dr. Taft) that will save Gibbs' life, but Gibbs will struggle after the fact.

'Gibbs Can't Move On' In Season 13 Of 'NCIS'?

On Monday the show's Twitter teased the season premiere and in it the medical staff works tirelessly to save Gibbs.

Gibbs is also seen hallucinating like he has done before. This time he sees his daughter though instead of his fallen friends and co-workers, but it is safe to say at least Mike Franks (Muse Watson) will return in the new season as a hallucination.

FOX News reported Tuesday that the premiere episode will focus on Gibbs' surgery and then he will be back at work, but there will be an obvious change felt.

"From the minute he steps off the elevator into the squad room, you're going to see a difference in who Gibbs is," showrunner Gary Glasberg shared, adding, "You're going to see a difference physically in who he is and then as the show progresses -- especially at the end, there's a phenomenal scene between Gibbs and John Cryer, where we see him say things that are not the Gibbs that we're used to. It's not a drastic change, but it's enough for people who really know this character to say, 'This man's been to hell and back.'"

NCIS returns to CBS on Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. ET.
