There's already been a whole bunch of drama unleashed on a small group of students at the progressive Hester High on Faking It, but things are only going to continue getting more complicated for Karma (Katie Stevens), Amy (Rita Volk) and the rest of the gang in the upcoming season.

Karma Goes Out Of Control In A New Trailer For 'Faking It'

"This season, it's a little bit about trust," showrunner Carter Covington tells Refinery 29 in a new interview.

Considering that the trailer for the season seems to hint at all kinds of hookups, breakups, protests and other major issues for the group-which includes the former 'fake' lesbian couple Karma and Amy as well as Karma's on/off beau Liam (Gregg Sulkin), his best friend Shane (Michael Willett) and Amy's stepsister Lauren (Bailey De Young)--the hint Covington gives is intriguing.

Karma Keeps 'Secrets' From Amy

Covington also dished on how the show has proven itself to be much more than its initial premise seemed to hint when it premiered in 2014. Initially, the show seemed destined for failure after promoting it was about two best friends who faked a lesbian relationship in order to become popular. Before the first episode's end however, it proved to be more-when it was revealed that Amy was actually confused about her sexuality and her feelings for Karma. That dynamic was one Covington says was loosely based on his own experiences as a teen.

"I knew that I wanted to have one of the best friends fall in love with [the other], and I wanted it to be a journey exploring that," Covington said. "Growing up in the closet in North Carolina, I was constantly having feelings for my best friends that I couldn't express. And as I talked to other friends, so many people had that moment of, like, 'I kind of want this friendship to be more, but I don't know if the other person feels the same way.' I think that it transcends straight or gay. It's just kind of a universal coming-of-age feelings."

Faking It season 2B premieres Monday, August 31 at 9:30 p.m. on MTV.
