Santa’s Outfit Angers Guest In Sweden, Police Intervene
A Santa Claus wearing a gray instead of a red costume angered a foreign visitor to a spa center in Sweden to the extend that the police had to be called to the scene on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.
No one was arrested during the incident on Christmas Day in Vallsta, 180 miles north of Stockholm, but police said the foreign guest was angry about the costume choice and argued with the center's staff. Authorities did not reveal where the foreigner was from.
Also going on in Sweden at the same time was the country's Santa Winter Games. Since 2003, Santas descend upon Gallivare in Sweden every year to compete over who is the best Santa. The competitors take part in Santa-related events such as sleigh pushing, mechanical-reindeer riding and porridge eating. Santa Holland won gold and this year's silver medalist was Hong Kong Santa Ho Wing-leong, who competed in the Santa Winter Games under the moniker Santa Rainbow. Hong Kong Santas have now placed in the medals for four years straight, starting with Santa Jim Chan who won gold in 2009.
With the Christmas holiday at an end, experts revealed that toy manufacturer Mattel's top-selling product this year was a plastic cellphone case, proving that children are now interested more in high-tech Christmas gifts such as tablets and smartphones than traditional toys in the sense of action figures and Barbie dolls. The switch has Mattel and fellow toys giant Hasbro "terrified" about the future profits of their companies, according to Sean McGowan, managing director of equity research at Needham & Company.
"Clearly, young people have an aptitude for and expectation with digital platforms that we need to recognize," said John Frascotti, chief marketing officer for Hasbro.
