Regina (Lana Parrilla) and Hook's (Colin O'Donoghue) past darkness will help inform things for Emma (Jennifer Morrison) in season 5 of ABC's Once Upon a Time.

'Once Upon a Time' Celebrates Fans With 'Dark Swan Rises' Special

Once Upon a Time co-creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz recently spoke with Yahoo about the various couples featured in the show. When it came to the subject of Emma and Hook, they cleared up the concept that they intentional set out to anger "Captain Swan" fans by keeping them apart so much.

"No one loves these characters more than us. We do not sit down and say, 'Let's piss off Captain Swan people today.' There are no agendas," Kitsis said. "The relationships that form or have obstacles are part of their journeys. At the end of last season they are ripped apart, but we see them right back together, dealing with the issue [in the premiere]. Her relationships with everybody are going to be tested. We love the idea of watching Hook fight for her, as well as [for] Regina and her family."

Which Two 'Once Upon a Time' Characters Will A Have 'Huge Bromance' In Season 5?

With Emma being swallowed up into darkness in the season 4 finale, season 5 will open with Regina, Hook and the others trying to get her back to the side of good. It will be a test for Hook and Regina especially, considering they have dabbled in the dark arts in the past.

"We also love the notion that two of the people that she has grown closest to over the years, Regina and Hook, have both battled darkness themselves, and their experiences can inform what she's going through and either help or hinder her," Horowitz said. "The whys of their relationship will be revealed, but it's a big part of the first half of this season. It's going to take the 11 episodes to get there."

Once Upon a Time season 5 premieres Sunday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
