Three police officers were wounded when a shooter opened fire in a New Jersey police station.

The incident took place early Friday morning at the Gloucester Township police headquarters and the suspected gunman was fatally shot by officers.

All three of the officers wounded were rushed to the Cooper University Hospital and one male cop had to undergo critical surgery but is in a stable condition. A male and a female officer both had "very minor" wounds, according to MyFoxPhilly.com.

"Fortunately, two of those officers are in stable condition and being treated for their wounds and should be released sometime today," Gloucester Police Chief Harry Earle said, as reported by ABC News.

The identity of the deceased shooter and the three cops involved has not been released at this time. The incident is currently under investigation by the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

The details released so far suggest that the suspect was originally being held at the police station and then obtained a weapon. The suspect was under arrest in connection with a domestic violence-related incident. Violence erupted around 5:30 a.m. and medics quickly responded to the scene.

The suspect first "obtained a firearm" during the violent struggle at which point officers "returned fire" and killed the suspect, according to police sources reported by MSN.

"Obviously, there is a very intense investigation regarding this back at the Gloucester Township police headquarters," Chief Earle said.

It is unknown at this time how exactly the suspect got hold of a firearm inside the police station.

Gloucester Township is located across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. The shooting is not expected to hinder normal police operations for the day in the township.

A news conference is scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. EST where more information will be released.
