Foster was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2012, around the time she signed a contract with Bravo to appear as a full-time cast member on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' third season. Then, two years later, while filming season five, Foster suffered a relapse, which left her unable to read, write and watch television.

Despite her hardships, and the ongoing speculation into her illness, Foster's husband, David, recently claimed she was determined to find a cure.

"Yolanda feels that it's part of her job to get to the bottom of this. She believes that if she cracks the code it will help a lot of other people with the disease," David told UK's Daily Mail last month. "I've told her more than once, I've said, 'You know, honey, you should really try and get better yourself first,' and she said, 'Yeah, but if I crack the code then a lot of people are going to get better.'"
