From Whitney Houston's death to the worldwide success of the K-Pop hit "Gangnam Style," 2012 was, by all accounts, an eventful year.Celebrities' scandals remained a highly interesting topic this year with the divorce between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, and the cheating scandal between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson topping headlines. The British royal family also received its fair share of attention after Prince William and Katherine Middleton announced they are expecting their first baby together. But that was not all the U.K. had to offer to the entertainment world. The London 2012 Olympics was the world stage for two U.S. sports stars to shine: Michael Phelps and Gabby Douglas. Phelps became the most decorated athlete in the world and Douglas was months later named this year's top female athlete after becoming the first African-American to win the all-around gymnastics gold medal.

1. Whitney Houston's Death

Whitney Houston died at the age of 49 in her Beverly Hills hotel room on February 11, as she prepared to attend the annual pre-Grammy bash of her producer and mentor Clive Davis. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office said Houston died of an accidental death in her hotel bathtub and a toxicology report added that heart disease and cocaine use contributed to her death. Houston reportedly ingested cocaine immediately prior to her collapse in the bathtub. According to reports, she could have passed out first due to the intoxication from the cocaine or she could have had a hear attack and then drowned.
