The Australian pop/punk rockers are gracing the cover of Billboard's Oct. 3 issue and getting real about music.

Drummer Ashton Irwin recalled their upbringings, admitting, "Our culture is working-class, like, f---ing violent. You can't afford s---. You take public transport. You buy $5 McDonald's meals. It's just epic, depressed suburbia."

He and his bandmates are incredibly honest when it comes to what they're thinking and feeling, which resonates through their forthcoming sophomore LP.

"She's Kinda Hot" is an in-your-face anthem about the underdogs rising. The band has said it's like a revolution.

With that in mind, the oldest 5SOS member further elaborated on why it's so important that he, Calum Hood, Michael Clfford and Luke Hemmings touch on these topics.

"Look at top 40 radio," he said, adding, "No one is writing music that highlights what everyone is scared to talk about, which is that everyone is sick and depressed these days. People our age, we all feel like s--- about ourselves. We wake up and we look at our phones and there are a thousand opinions on who we are or what we are. It's destructive."

The band is with their fans as equals going through the motions of growing up.
