Olympic medalist and swimmer Michael Phelps is once again single after splitting from his girlfriend of nine months, model Megan Rossee, TMZ reported.

Sources told the gossip website that Phelps, 27, ended his relationship with Rossee after he did not see it going anywhere. The 22-time American Olympic gold medalist first went public with Rossee, 25, in August at a London Olympic event, though Us Weekly noted that the couple officially dated in March 2012.

The pair  appeared together on the red carpet at a Speedo-sponsored event in August and Rossee regularly talked about her relationship with Phelps on Twitter, posting a number of photographs of them together. One image showed her and a group of others in London in August as part of "MPs huge following," referring to her then boyfriend.

By publicizing her relationship with Phelps, some speculated that Rossee only dated the acclaimed athlete to attain fame.

"Like any young girl hoping to make it in Hollywood, she's ambitious and knows that by associating herself with Michael she will get a lot of press herself," a source told Radar Online. "She's desperate for her own fame - her career has been a slow-burner but this will certainly accelerate it."

Phelps retired from swimming, though he still teaches the sport, following his success in the 2012 London Games and has since taken up golfing. He landed on the cover of Golf Digest's December issue among four different cover subjects - Bill Clinton, Morgan Freeman and Michael J. Fox -  for a a feature entitled "Game Changers: Golfers Who Give Back." The story covered the charity work of the golfers among other celebrity players.

In the cover story, Phelps jokingly said the only way he would ever compete at the Olympics again was in golf.
