In a new interview with the Pittsburgh Gazette, Rimes says she realized early on that she was helping her family pay the bills with her voice.

She explained, "Oh God, when you are right in the middle of it, I don't think you really realize that is happening. Here I am on stage doing all these shows and interviews and, like you said, making money for the family, and then it was like, "Go clean your room." [laughing] It was definitely odd. My dad worked full time, and my mom did odd jobs. When I had extreme success, it really was like night and day."

As far as being addicted to attention, Rimes said, "The only child syndrome thing comes into play. As a kid, I could get people to pay attention to me because of my voice. I used to go to the living room where the family was around Christmas and the holidays. I would sing and then stop in the middle of a song. If they clapped for me, I would go on. If they didn't clap, I would walk away."

Rimes also said that even with all the relentless tabloid scrutiny that she's been getting throughout the years, it is yet to break her inner spirit.

"I just now started to give myself credit for how strong I am. A lot of people would not have been able to get through that, the constant tearing down of a human being - not because it was true but just because it sold magazines," Rimes said. "I don't think I can put into words how difficult at one point it was for me."
