This season on The Vampire Diaries the relationship between the Salvatore brothers, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley), will really be explored.

Without Elena (Nina Dobrev) Damon will kind of be more alone, but he still has his brother. These siblings have been known to bump heads, but they'll be on better terms for the most part in the new season.

Somerhalder spoke with TV Fanatic about his character's sibling bond with Stefan for this season and how it's a result of Elena being gone and how Damon's relationships with others are.

Lily Is 'F------ Up A Lot Of Things' In Mystic Falls During New 'Vampire Diaries' Season

"They're getting closer," Somerhalder dished, adding, "Ya know, they're forced to. They have to."

Damon is "really pissed" off though with his younger brother due to things happening in Mystic Falls with their mother Lily (Annie Wershing) and her heretic family. The Salvatore siblings have lost their home to the heretics and their mom heading into this season.

Regardless of the slightly miffed feelings, Damon and Stefan need to be united.

"They're forced to be a pair. They're forced to be a team," Somerhalder revealed, explaining, "I mean they have to be. They have to be a team. Stefan is the only family he has. His mother has abandoned him. His girl is gone. His best friend Alaric [Matt Davis] is in a total tizzy. His other best friend Bonnie [Kat Graham] is in another one."

Damon's struggling with his relationships, but he'll always have his brother and the instinct to work with and protect him.

The series returns to The CW for Season 7 on Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. ET.
