There is no cure for lupus, but there are various treatment options to help a person diagnosed with it manage their symptoms.

Gomez revealed to Billboard for the cover story on her about her battle with the autoimmune disease.

"I was diagnosed with lupus, and I've been through chemotherapy. That's what my break was really about. I could've had a stroke," she admitted.

While chemotherapy is synonymous with cancer treatment, it's one of the options available for lupus patients depending on the symptoms a patient has present. The treatment, when dealing with diseases in rheumatology, is used in smaller doses and is meant to change the behavior in the cells that are attacking the patient's immune system.

Gomez further talked about the break she took in 2013 since other reports and rumors flew that she was in rehab for drug abuse, but that obviously was not the case.

"I wanted so badly to say, 'You guys have no idea. I'm in chemotherapy. You're a***holes,'" she shared, adding, "But I was angry I even felt the need to say that. It's awful walking into a restaurant and having the whole room look at you, knowing what they're saying. I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again."
