Supernatural Sam Winchester is ready to branch out from Team Free Will.

'Supernatural' Season 11 Spoilers: How Many People Have The Mark? New Theories About Amara

The hunter's past is riddled by sporadic and turbulent relationships, most of which end in death, heartbreak, or both. During season 11, however, Sammy (Jared Padalecki) will look for friendship away from his older brother and Castiel (Misha Collins).

"Without giving away too much, Sam gets a friend this year," Padalecki revealed at Creation Entertainment's Salute to Supernatural in Toronto.

'Supernatural' Season 11: A New Angel Arrives, What Does He Want? Actor Explains

The actor didn't say when this relationship would evolve, and we're hoping he's not merely referring to the reemergence of Sam's imaginary friend in episode 8. Padalecki did, however, explain why there is such a difference between Sam's paucity of relationships and Dean's (Jensen Ackles) plethora of pals.

"Story wise, I think the reason Dean has had so many other tertiary characters like Castiel or Benny or whatnot is because we learn more about Sam from Sam than we do about Dean from Dean," Padalecki explained. "Dean is a lot more private than Sam is, so we see Sam in situations and we learn about him in [those] scenes...but Dean [has a] bigger wall up so we have to learn about him in other ways."
