In a joint statement to People on Tuesday, the couple mentioned that despite this difficult announcement, they are working hard to stay a family for the sake of their son.

"It is with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to divorce," the statement reads. "We move forward with love and respect for one another and the shared focus of what is best for our son. We wish each other nothing but happiness in life and we hope that you respect our and, most importantly, our children's privacy as we go through this difficult period."

The two tied the knot in July 2013. Their son, Maceo, was born in October 2013. Berry also has a daughter, Nala, 7, from a previous relationship with Gabriel Aubry.

A source mentioned that the romance between Berry and Martinez had "run its course."

"They are keeping it amicable now," the source added. "She is okay."

In an interview with Yahoo! one year ago, Berry opened up on what it was like having a spouse who's French.

"I have definitely changed as a result of being married to a French husband," the actress said about Martinez. "French women would not put their sweats on and run out to the market. So I care more about what I wear out of the house, because if not, he calls me out on it."
