'Castle' Star Nathan Fillion Admits Why He Asked Showrunners If They Were 'High'

Castle fans finally saw hope on the horizon in Monday night's winter finale, when Beckett and Castle decided they would team up for the case. But just because they're teaming up again doesn't mean they're living in the same place again.

Showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter spoke to The Hollywood Reporter after the episode and revealed why they're still separated.

'Castle' Fans Confused As ABC Pushes Winter Premiere Back To February

"The public face of them is still broken up, so she'll be sneaking in to see him," Hawley revealed. "They will be spending time together. We will now return to scenes at the beginning and end of episodes with them ..."

"In bed," Winter added.

"Yes, in bed, but she's sneaking in through the back door because the public face is still they are broken up," Hawley continued. She's trying to keep this public idea that Castle is out of her life."

While things are pretty much settled between them, Castle will still have his guard up about whether Beckett is telling him the whole truth of everything going on. But Beckett's awakening in the interrogation room signals there won't be any secrets between them now.

"The realization that Beckett had when she was confronted in that interrogation room when he says, 'You like being broken' ... Ultimately that realization means that she can move on. She can change," Hawley said. "The days of her lying to him, the days of her keeping secrets are behind them because now she knows that no matter what he's with her. It's not like she didn't know it before but there's part of her that was trying to push him away. There's a part of her that feels like she had to do it herself."

Castle returns Monday, Feb. 1 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
