Jim Nabors, the actor best known for his role in The Andy Griffith Show, has married Stan Cadwallader, his longtime partner of 38 years.

The two met in 1975 when Cadwallader, 64, had the job of a Honolulu firefighter.

"I'm 82 and he's in his 60s and so we've been together for 38 years and I'm not ashamed of people knowing, it's just that it was such a personal thing, I didn't tell anybody," Nabors said. "I'm very happy that I've had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And, what can I tell you, I'm just very happy."

Nabors and Cadwallader tied the knot on Jan. 15 in Washington, days after gay marriage became legal in the state. The couple traveled from Hawaii for a private ceremony at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle, perfomed by only a judge. A few close friends were in attendance. For years, Nabors had been open about his sexuality to close friends, but never addressed it to the media before. He said that with gay couples now obtaining equal rights under the law, it was very important for him and Cadwallader to be protected legally..

"I'm not ashamed of people knowing, it's just that it was a personal thing, I didn't tell anybody," Nabors said. "I'm very happy that I've has a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And, what can I tell you, I'm just very happy."

Nabors' career bloomed when he was discovered by Andy Griffith. His character of Gomer Pyle - the lovable gas attendant - was most recognized for his signature line, "Go-lllllll-ly!"

"This is really no big deal. My friend and I, my partner, we went through all of this 38 years ago. So, I mean, we made ur vows and that was it. It was to eacg other, but nevertheless, we were a couple," said Nabors.

He also added that he has no plans to get involved in the issue politically, or serve as a gay rights' activist.
