Selena Gomez returned to the recording studio and took her Twitter fans with her, posting online photos and messages hinting at what fans can expect from the singer's new album.

Working with producers and songwriters Rock Mafia, the 20-year-old gave viewers an exclusive look into her Los Angeles based studio. In one image, posted on Sunday, the singer confirmed "today in the studio" while pretending to be Penny Lane from "Almost Famous."

Her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber, told Billboard magazine in an interview for his February cover story that one of the songs off of his new "Believe Acoustic" album - titled "Nothing Like Us" - was inspired by his breakup with Gomez. Though the former Disney star has not been as forthcoming with the inspiration behind her new tunes, she posted an image from her recording session on Monday with the caption, "it's a sad, sad serenade @rock_mafia." Gomez is pictured leaning back in her chair, holding one hand in the air.

On Tuesday, the "Who Says" singer posted a photo of her wearing a backwards baseball cap while facing the recording machines. She captioned the image, "I can make the Stars Dance." On the blue cap Gomez sported was the Stratford Culliton hockey team logo. Earlier in January, Bieber had that same logo tattooed on the back of his left shoulder as a tribute to his grandfather who he would go to hockey games with.

Gomez's album is expected to be released later in 2013.

Gomez and Bieber broke up days before New Year's following a reported dispute they had while on vacation in Mexico. The couple was on and off for two years.

Gomez performed at the annual UNICEF charity concert on Jan. 19, her first show in over a year. She told the audience "it feels so good to be back" and added, "I've been through a lot the last couple of months. It's been sad and cool, but interesting."
