Real Madrid vs Barcelona is a massive game in Spain on Wednesday, with all eyes in the footballing world focusing on Lionel Messi facing off against Cristiano Ronaldo as the two sides clash in the Spanish Copa Del Rey competition. Lionel Messi has won the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 World Player of the Year awards - the latter coming after he broke the record for goals in a calendar year.

Cristiano Ronaldo to an extent has had to operate as second fiddle to Messi over recent years, which is unfortunate, since Ronaldo is undoubtedly right up there as one of the best footballers the world has ever seen. However, at every turn it seems Messi’s achievements have just about surpassed Ronaldo’s.

Ronaldo has scored a bag full of goals in each of the past seasons too, however, and he will see every game against Barcelona, and Messi, as an opportunity to show the world he is up there next to and even better than his Argentinian counterpart.

This season so far in all competitions, Messi has scored 44 goals in 32 appearances, also providing 11 assists.

In comparison Ronaldo has scored 33 goals in 32 appearances, with 6 assists.

So Ronaldo is still scoring at a rate of more than one goal a game - an amazing accomplishment, but it still pales when put next to Messi’s 44 goals in 32 games.

If the two players are looked at in just La Liga games, then Messi has scored 33 in 21 games, where as Ronaldo has 21 goals in 20 games.

Either way, tonight will see both players face off against one another, and with these two stars playing, soccer fans across the world will be tuning in to see fireworks and probably some amazing goals too.
