Supergirl viewers were looking for a villain where a hero was hiding.

Hank Henshaw (David Harewood) is not the devilish cyborg fans speculated. No, the man who viewers believed could be the bane of the Superman/Supergirl universe really turned out to be none other then J'Onn J'Onzz AKA Martian Manhunter. A shape shifter and a force for good, Manhunter has been secretly aiding the world under the guise of the DEO director.

"He's got such tremendous powers," executive producer Ali Adler told The Hollywood Reporter. "We really want to show off what he can do, and we're definitely going to do that in upcoming episodes."

Unlike Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist), Hank can't easily reveal his true self to the citizens of National City. Tall, green, and menacing looking, Manhunter will keep to the shadows while Supergirl shines in the public eye. It is for this reason Henshaw originally seemed to despise Alex's (Chyler Leigh) adoptive sister.

"Kara's beautiful and attractive and blonde and gorgeous, and I'm this seven-foot green Martian. As much as I just want to be myself, it would terrify people to be confronted with this alien," Harewood explained. "He's still got conflicts and issues that he has to deal with, but seeing Kara enjoy coming out of the closet or revealing her true nature, he's envious because he knows he can't quite do that."
