Whenever an awards show announces the nominees, there are bound to be a few unhappy people in the mix. After all, with so many amazing films and television shows out there, it's inevitable that a few gems get lost in the shuffle. Today the Hollywood Foreign Press announced the 2016 Golden Globe nominees, and the results have left more than a few people scratching their heads. Here are the most surprising Golden Globe snubs of the season.

Black Mass

This controversial crime film about real-life Boston mob boss Whitey Bulger received mixed reviews from critics, including those who questioned whether it was appropriate to make a movie about such recent events. The movie was bolstered by impressive performances by Johnny Depp and Benedict Cumberbatch, but even these A-list stars couldn't garner a nod from the Hollywood Foreign Press.

Bridge of Spies

How can a movie directed by Steve Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks fail to get a single major nomination from the Golden Globes? Apparently by having the title Bridge of Spies. Despite being hailed by critics its award season showing has been remarkably weak. None of the major players have received any sort of nomination for their work on a complex and well-received film about the Cold War. Could there be some espionage afoot? On the upside, Mark Rylance did receive a nod for Best Supporting Actor.

Mad Men

The critically acclaimed hit AMC show took its final bow this year, but this fact seems to have been overlooked by the Hollywood Foreign Press. Aside from Jon Hamm receiving what will be his last chance to win an award for his portrayal of Don Draper, the powerful and beloved show didn't get any sort of farewell from the Golden Globes.

Spotlight

Sure, this critical darling received a nomination for Best Picture--but what about its stellar cast? Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, and Mark Ruffalo were all overlooked in the acting categories. It's a strange omission for what is widely considered one of the best films of the year.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

This hit from Netflix was one of the most successful streaming shows of the year, and a true celebration of the comedic chops of star Ellie Kemper. But despite the Hollywood Foreign Press' affinity for streaming shows, this seriously entertaining show was mysteriously overlooked.

Straight Outta Compton

It was a critical home-run and a surprise hit at the box office (earning over $200 million), but despite its impressive pedigree the biopic of N.W.A. was completely shut out of the Golden Globes. Luckily the SAG awards gave the movie some much-deserved attention with a nomination for Outstanding Performance By A Cast. A win for the film could help keep it at the forefront of awards season (and maybe even get it some notice from the Oscars).

Parks And Recreation

It's hard to believe that this show is really over, and that the series is truly gone. But 2015 saw us say goodbye to the residents of Pawnee in a hilarious and heartfelt finale. Apparently this fact failed to move the Associated Foreign Press; the show didn't receive a single nomination. Perhaps most surprising was the shut-out of star Amy Poehler, who's actually hosted the Golden Globes in the past. Ron Swanson would never stand for this sort of nonsense.
