The Leftovers is returning for season 3, but what's the full story behind it being determined the final season?

Why 'The Leftovers' Fans Went To HBO HQ Dressed As Guilty Remnant

Fans of The Leftovers received good news on Thursday after weeks of campaigning to HBO for the show to be renewed. But while HBO did end up picking the show up for a third season, it was also announced that the show would be coming to an end.

Series co-creator Damon Lindelof actually enforced season 3 as the final season, mentioning in the HBO renewal press release that it will serve as a proper end after a beginning (season 1) and middle (season 2).

'The Leftovers' Renewed For Season 3, But With A Twist

Lindelof expanded more upon his decision to end The Leftovers next season in an interview with HitFix.

"It's a gut instinct," he explained. "I feel like there's more story, but not MUCH more. And I don't want to drag it out unnecessarily. Lots of fans and critics understandably had a sense that we could have ended after season two... That was a strong indication we were closer to the end than the beginning."

Lindelof also spoke about when he received the news that The Leftovers was being renewed.

"I'm in Jersey helping my mom move," he said. "I was afraid I'd have to sing for my supper when I got back to L.A next week... I didn't. Mike Lombardo called with the good news and it was a done deal."

The Leftovers season 3 does not have a set premiere date for HBO.
