Apple dropped the price of many MacBook series laptops on Wednesday by up to $300.

The price drop is not the only change the company made to get customers eager as they also boosted some of the specs. Apple updated the processor on the MacBook Pro and other models in addition to more memory, according to CNN.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display now starts $1,499, which is $200 less than the previous price. The higher-capacity 256GB version now costs $1,699. That version is $300 cheaper than the original price with a processor speed boosted to 2.6 gigahertz from 2.5GHz.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina also gets a speed boost, with the lower-end version getting its speed bumped up to 2.4GHz from 2.3GHz, and the higher-end version getting bumped up to 2.7GHz quad-core processor from 2.6GHz, as well as double the RAM at 16 gigabytes.

It appears that Apple is trying to make the line of MacBook Pros with Retina displays more accessible as they have always been a higher-end item with a price tag that was over the budget of many customers.

The cheapest option is the standard 13-inch MacBook Pro which is priced significantly less at $1,199.

The MacBook Pro series devices are not the only laptops that received a discounted price.

Apple also cut the price of its high-end MacBook Air with the 256GB version now going for $1,399, which is $100 less than the previous price. The lower price will likely help the MacBook Air compete against the recent launch of Microsoft's Surface Pro hybrid tablet/ultrabook.

The price cuts may help Mac sales which were reportedly down by 22 percent in the final quarter of 2012, according to The Huffington Post.

The updated MacBook Pro with Retina display and MacBook Air models are available today through the Apple Online Store, Apple's retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers.
