The end is nigh for Person of Interest.

'Person Of Interest' Season 5: Can The Finale Function As A Series Finale? EP Details Show's Future

The terrorist fighting drama's heyday has come and gone. With a 13-episode fifth season hanging in scheduling limbo, CBS and executive producer JJ Abrams are already sounding the death knell.

"My guess is it is the final season," Abrams said at the 2016 Television Critics Association winter press tour, according to TV Insider. "The only heartbreak there is how much good story there was to come if it were to have continued."

While this is certainly not the news fans have been hoping of - a premiere date would have been better received - but Abrams did ease a few finale fears. Although CBS has yet to drop the axe, the Person of Interest writers room prepared for the worst. The season finale, "Return 0," was penned to function as a series finale if need be.

"But, obviously, things can be adjusted if [there's] a miraculous [ratings] performance," Abrams told TV Line. "But I think the idea is that this would be the finale."
