The official website for Independence Day: Resurgence reveals that Will Smith's character, Steve Hiller, is going to be dead in the sequel.

In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, Smith recently responded to the fact, and admitted that he was left quite sad by it. The actor also hinted at why he couldn't commit to the project.

"I was working on Suicide Squad during that time. [Independence Day director] Roland [Emmerich] and I had talked about it," he said. "The trailer looks really cool. I'm going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out...It was terrible when I found out my character died."

Speaking to Cinema Blend, Director Roland Emmerich had also previously revealed why Smith didn't want to join the sequel.

"In the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was excited to be in it, but then after a while he was tired of sequels, and he did another science-fiction film, which was his father-son story [After Earth], so he opted out," he said.

Independence Day: Resurgence will star Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner.

Independence Day: Resurgence will hit theaters on June 24, 2016, with Independence Day just around the corner.
