This Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday which honors the life of the prominent civil rights leader who peacefully fought for change in the United States. 

Because the day is recognized as a holiday, several businesses, offices and other places may have altered hours as a result. Below is a list of expected hours for various places. 

OPEN: 
 

National Parks: National Parks are open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and offer free admission as part of the day's observance. This will include the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta, Ga. and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial in Washington D.C. 

Private Businesses: Check with local establishments to see what hours they may have. Some may be closed entirely, operate on a normal schedule, or may have reduced hours. 

Restaurants: Expect most chain restaurants to be open and operating with normal hours, though call ahead to check.  

Retail Stores: If you need to do some shopping, all stores, including Costco, Walmart, Target, Kohls, Macy's, Rite Aid, CVS, and more are not only expected to be open, but with normal hours. Many are also offering big sales in honor of the holiday. 

Transportation Services: While transportation services should, be open, the levels of service may be altered to reflect a holiday schedule. Check locally, but some of the more major transit services across the U.S. have the following schedules: 

     Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA): Rail and bus service operating on a modified Saturday schedule 

     Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA): All Subway lines except for the Silver Line will operate on a Saturday schedule, as will buses and trackless trolleys. However, Commuter rail services and boat services will operate on a normal weekday schedule. 

     Los Angeles County Metro Rail: Metro buses and trains are running regular Monday schedules 

     Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA): Subways and the Staten Island railway will operate on a regular weekday schedule, while New York City buses will operate on a reduced weekday schedule. The Long Island Railroad will operate on a Holiday schedule, and Metro-North Railroad will operate on a Saturday schedule. 

     Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority: MetroRail and MetroBus are operating on Saturday schedules 

CLOSED: 
 

Banks: With the exception being TD Bank, most are expected to be closed, though you should check with your specific financial institution to be sure 

Courts: State and Federal courts are closed 

Department of Motor Vehicles: DMV Offices are closed 

Federal Offices: Federal Organizations (FDA IRS etc.) are closed 

Libraries: Libraries are closed 

Municipal Offices: These offices, usually dealing in more localized governmental affairs. are closed 

Post Office: All Post Office locations are closed and mail delivery is suspended 

Sanitation Department: Sanitation Services and garbage collection are suspended for the day and Landfills are closed 

Schools: Public and Private Schools are closed. As for colleges, expect State schools to likely have no classes in session, and most private institutions should be closed as well, though it may vary. 

State Offices: State offices are closed 

U.S. Stock Market: Financial markets are closed, but international ones should be open
