Not long before Diane Lane and Josh Brolin announced news of their divorce on Thursday, the actor talked about how great his wife was in a press interview for his film Gangster Squad.

"She's a very strong woman, extremely strong," the 45-year-old actor said referring to Lane, who will play Martha Kent in the upcoming Superman movie Man of Steel. In the same interview Brolin talked about how he and Lane, 48, would make their eight-year marriage work despite having Hollywood careers that constantly thrust them in front of the media. He said, "We're not really in the spotlight."

"I mean, we are in times like this [junket interview], but, you know, there's one light. We just do our own thing, and we always have," Brolin added. "And we're not in L.A. all the time, we're up north a lot of the time where I grew up, so, you know, you just do what you do. You don't play up into the hype so much."

A representative for the couple confirmed the couple's split on Thursday and an inside source told Us Weekly, "It was a mutual decision. It is very amicable. It's not ugly, it's just over."

In a previous interview with Redbook magazine, Lane talked about her relationship with Brolin and how she learned to cherish every moment they have together.

"My work life has grown, my relationship with Josh has grown, my responsibilities as a parent grew and changed," she said. "One day about a year and a half ago, I realized I can't put these responsibilities in a jar and tend to them later, especially when it comes to time with my family. Life isn't 'when the kids get a little older' or 'when Josh and I have the perfect quiet moment alone.' Right now is all we've got."

It is the second divorce for Brolin and Lane. The couple had no children together.
