With the 2013 Oscars now upon us, the Best Picture category still seems to be up for grabs. However, Argo, starring Ben Affleck, has been at the top of several Oscar prediction lists.

Only three times before in the history of the Academy Award has a movie taken home a Best Picture Oscar when it's director wasn't even nominated, and only one time since 1932: Driving Miss Daisy won it in 1990, although director Bruce Beresford didn't receive a nomination for Best Director.

Nonetheless, a major alteration in the protocol for Oscar nomination happened in 2009, as up to 10 nominations are now allowed to compete for Best Picture.

Oscar forecaster and Harvard sophomore Ben Zauzmer spoke to the International Business Times about the change's impact on the contest.

"For many years, just about all of the nominees for Best Picture are getting nominated for Best Director - because there were five of each. So getting nominated for Best Director, mathematically speaking, means you're likely to lose, because the losers are also getting nominated for Best Director."
