The 24-year-old already won a Grammy Award and a BRIT Award for the song earlier in the year. The Associated Press noted that at rehearsals on Saturday for her Skyfall performance, Adele wowed the Dolby Theatre audience made up at the time of only award show workers.

Adele returned to the stage to perform on Sunday after a long hiatus, where she had a son with her boyfriend Simon Konecki. Other performers on Sunday were Barbara Streisand, Nora Jones and Shirley Bassey.

Jones performed the Oscar-nominated song Everybody Needs a Best Friend from the film Ted. Streisand's performance was only the second time she had sung at the awards show and Bassey made her Oscars debut in a special tribute honoring the 50th anniversary of the Bond film series. The film Skyfall was nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

Cast members of Les Miserables - including Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Eddie Redmayne - along with others performed a musical tribute to the revival of big-screen musicals during the last decade. The performance included Jennifer Hudson, who won an Oscar for her role in the 2006 film Dreamgirls, and Catherine Zeta -Jones, whose character in the film adaptation of Chicago also won her an Oscar.
