Right after it was announced that accident-prone Jennifer Lawrence won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role on Sunday, she took a tumble on her way up to the stage to claim her trophy.

The Silver Linings Playbook star tripped on the second step up the stairs as Les Miserables actor Hugh Jackman jumped to his feet to try and help her. After finally making it to the podium, Lawrence managed a joke as she collected an Oscar for her performance as a recovering sex addict in the comedic drama.

"You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell over and that's embarrassing," she said. "This is nuts."

At a press conference after the show, she added more embarrassment when she reacted to one photographer who told her to "watch her step." She responded by making an obscene gesture.

When asked what happened in terms of the fall, Lawrence told the Academy backstage: "What do you mean, what happened? Look at my dress. I tried to walk up stairs in this dress. That's what happened. I think I just stepped on the fabric and they waxed the stairs."

One journalist asked if her fall was a joke and she responded, "Was that on purpose? Absolutely."

Lawrence was wearing a full-skirted Dior Haute Couture strapless gown with a long train. On the red carpet, she admitted to Ryan Seacrest she had taken six inches off the train of the dress before the show.

"It would have been too insane," Lawrence said.

The 22-year-old who also received an Oscar nomination in 2011 endured an embarrassing moment four weeks ago when her dress fell apart as she went to collect a Screen Actors Guild Award.
