Is there a chance that Callie and Brandon's relationship is over for good on The Fosters?

'The Fosters' Promo Shows Insight On What's Next For Callie & Brandon

That seems like a definite possibility based on Maia Mitchell (Callie) and David Lambert's (Brandon) interview with TV Line on Sunday. As fans remember, the characters ended up taking their romance to the next level for one steamy alone time in a cabin only to find out that Callie's adoption processed into her becoming part of the family- meaning that she and Brandon can't have a romantic relationship.

So when the actress was asked if there's a chance that she might find new love (possibly with AJ), she wasn't completely against the idea. But maybe it's best that Callie focuses on other things while she's young.

Will Callie & Brandon's Secret Be Exposed On 'The Fosters?'

"AJ's back, so you'll see that relationship develop in a certain way, absolutely," Mitchell said. "She now has room to explore other options. I don't think anyone wants to meet the love of their life at 16."

Even though Callie and Brandon do what they can to see what lies ahead, it won't be that easy since the past will probably haunt them for a bit.

"It's a new chapter for these two," Lambert said. "It's healthy, it's good. Ultimately, they're just trying to move on as best as they can. But with that said, the show is definitely a catharsis with the whole forbidden love theme and everything that's included with that. So it goes back and forth."

The Fosters returns on Monday, January 25 at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.
