Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder recently revealed how the ending of Man of Steel really set the upcoming blockbuster in motion.

How 'Batman v Superman' Director Zack Snyder Inspired Ben Affleck

Many D.C. fans were not happy with the ending of Man of Steel, which featured Superman (Henry Cavill) destroying most of Metropolis in his fight against General Zod (Michael Shannon) and ultimately killing him. But for those who think this ending won't be referenced in future movies, think again.

In fact, the ending is a springboard for the entire conflict in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Snyder explained this in an interview with Famous Monsters:

'Batman v Superman' Star Henry Cavill Says 'Man of Steel' Issues Won't Be Addressed

"I wanted a big consequence to Superman's arrival on Earth. Certainly, Batman v Superman sort of cashes in all its chips on the 'why' of that destruction," Snyder noted. "The discovery of the story is that Batman fights Superman. Now move your superhero chess pieces so that can happen. And it can happen in a credible and interesting way."

Snyder also spoke about how the conflict between Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman works on a variety of levels.

"It's just incredibly satisfying and fun to dig into these two mythological characters and find a through line that allows them to come into conflict in a way that not only is philosophically satisfying, but also physically real," Synder said.

With only two months left before the film's arrival in theaters, many are eagerly anticipating who will win out in the big conflict between the iconic superheroes.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled for release in theaters on March 25.
