If The X-Files finale accomplished one thing on Monday, it was to make sure that fans would be clamoring for more episodes the second the credits rolled.

'The X-Files' 2016: Where Is William? EP Teases Major Finale Mystery

The series' six-episode revival came to an end with "My Struggle II," but for Mulder and Scully (Gillian Anderson), it's clear their forays into the paranormal are nowhere near over. Series creator Chris Carter promised to end the brief run with a cliffhanger, and boy, he sure wasn't kidding.

In the final moments of "My Struggle II," Scully was left standing over an ailing Mudler (David Duchovny). Upon realizing that her cure for the Spartan Virus wasn't enough to save his life, Scully comes to the conclusion that he needs William's stem cells. Just as this revelation passes her lips, the agent is engulfed in light from a bona fide UFO.

It's at this point that viewers around the country uttered a chorus of "OMG" and "WTF." Luckily, Carter was quick to provide a few answers - including an almost 100 percent guarantee that the beloved series will return once more.

"I can tell you this: Fox owns this show. I can't imagine, with the ratings that we've got and the way we ended this season, that there won't be more X-Files," Carter told TV Line.

As for fans two other big questions - where is William and why was an abductee like Mulder affected by the virus - Carter remained cryptic.

"I can't tell you [where William is]," Carter teased. Like William's MIA status, the showrunner acknowledged that the query regarding Mulder's immune system is "a good question. And one that needs to be answered."
