The Academy has chosen Alejandro G. Iñárritu as the winner of Best Director at the Oscars 2016.

"I can't believe this is happening," Iñárritu said while accepting his fourth ever Oscar, before calling the audience to see past skin color and "no longer think in tribes."

Iñárritu won the Oscar for his film, The Revenant, beating out Adam McKay for The Big Short, George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road, Tom McCarthy for Spotlight, Lenny Abrahamson forRoom

Heading into the Oscars, many awards prognosticators had predicted Iñárritu as the winner after his big win at the Directors Guild Awards earlier this month. A few were predicting Miller or McKay, with McCarthy or Abrahamson having an outside shot.

This is the second year in a row that Iñárritu has won the Oscar for Best Director, winning last year for Birdman.
