Katie Holmes appears on the cover of Allure's April issue and said in her interview with the magazine that she hopes this year will turn out better than last.

She filed for divorce last June after being married to Tom Cruise for five years. Holmes said that following her divorce, as well as 2012 tragedies like the Newtown, Conn. shooting and Hurricane Sandy, she wants 2013 to be a "peaceful year for a lot of people."

The 34-year-old moved out of California following her divorce and now lives in New York with her 6-year-old daughter Suri. A single mother-of-one, Holmes touched on the idea of expanding her family in the near future.

"I'm open to it," she said in the interview.

Allure's April issue will go on sale nationwide March 26.

Holmes shared advice not only about makeup and hair but also about being a genuinely good person.  Holmes said her mother told her when she was younger, "You may be pretty, and you may be talented, but nobody will remember that if you're mean."

Holmes isn't closing out the idea of becoming an attorney, claiming her brother and dad are both attorneys.

But she said, "It was always my goal to make it back to the stage."
