Girl Meets World will make life a whole lot more complicated for Maya and Riley in season 3.

The youngsters are growing up, and viewers need to look no further than the current Maya (Sabrina Carpenter)/Riley (Rowan Blanchard)/Lucas (Peyton Meyer) love triangle for proof. We use the word "love" loosely - they're only kids after all - but the way the trio have gone about working through their feelings show that they have a maturity well beyond their age.

When the trio moves to high school, however, dating will move into the foreground. Prepare for a little sprinkling of awkward to color the burgeoning teen romance.

"It's funny, we'll joke about the triangle now," Carpenter told TV Insider as season 2 came to a close with "Girl Meets Legacy." "You'll definitely see things happen in Season 3, [but] right now they're not awkward about it. There are comments about it [but Riley and Maya] are not jealous of each other. They're always willing to talk it out or figure things out."

That being said, series creator Michael Jacobs was quick to remind viewers that the current storyline is about much more than a paltry love triangle.

"On "Girl Meets World," if the audience perceives that what this is about is a love triangle, then they don't know us," Jacobs told The Wrap. "There is a much bigger and broader conceptual question that we are answering with what appears to be a triangle between Riley, Maya and Lucas."

While some fans have interpreted this to mean that there is no love triangle at all - or that it is actually a love rhombus or pentagon - that's not quite what Jacobs said. Girl Meets World is very much as lesson-of-the-week series, and while Maya, Riley, and Lucas are all currently encumbered with confusing feelings, the Disney drama is looking to deliver a broader message. The tale of Lucaya and Rucas is more about young teens exploring exactly what it means to be in "like" than an emotionally devastating will-they/won't-they mess.
