Target came under fire after one of its customers noticed an offensive term was used to describe one of the plus-sized dresses displayed on the company's online catalog, according to FOX News.

Target shopper Susan Clemens took to Twitter after noticing on Wednesday that the Mossimo Kimono Maxi Dress on the company's website came in "manatee grey" for the plus-sized dress, while the same dress was referred to as "dark heather grey" for the standard sizes.

The manatee, nicknamed the "sea cow", was an blatantly offensive word choice for any Target shopper interested in plus-sized clothing.

Clemens Tweeted a screencap of the product in question as well as a message for the store.

"What the. Plus sized women get 'Manatee Grey' while standard sizes are 'Dark Heather Grey'" she wrote, followed by the hashtag "notbuyingit".

The big box company, which was swift in its apology, has called the embarrassing incident a "learning experience", according to reports.

The company's official Twitter feed released a response hours after Clemens' tweet apologizing for the "unintentional oversight" which Target said it never intended to be offensive to its customers.

"We've hear you, and we're working to fix it ASAP," the company's Twitter added.

Following the incident, the "manatee grey" version of the dress found by Clemens had been taken down from the Target website.

"We never want to offend any of our guests," Target spokeswoman Jessica Deede told TODAY.com "We apologize for any discomfort that we may have caused."

However, according to Today, Deede said that the color "manatee grey" is, in actuality, a seasonal color which the Target site offers for many of its products from t-shirts to towels to rain boots.

"We are in the process of fixing the discrepancy and updating Target.com so the gray dress will be available in all styles," Deede told the website. "We're working on updating our systems right now. We'll use this instance as a learning experience so we can do better moving forward."
