Nintendo has just given Wii U owners some really good news on Monday, as the Japanese gaming giant announced that owners of the digital version of Minecraft: Wii U Edition would receive a pretty awesome update on May 17. What's the update? Well, a pretty darn good skin featuring Super Mario Bros.' iconic worlds.

The update, which will be rolled out for free as an update to existing Minecraft: Wii U Edition owners on May 17, would feature custom and official Mario skins, music, item textures, as well as a Super Mario-themed world. Thus, players would not only have to contend with nosy creepers, Minecraft: Wii U players would have to deal with Dry Bones and Hammer Bros. as well.

From the trailer released by Nintendo, among the best skins included in the mash-up featured Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Wario and even all seven Koopalings. Dungeons were also featured, which would be pretty interesting, as the mash-up would present the dungeons as 3D environments, in contrast to Mario's traditional 2D approach.

In a statement, Steve Singer, VP of publisher and developer relations for Nintendo, stated that Mario and Minecraft are actually very similar at heart, making the mash-up really effective.

"Both the Super Mario franchise and Minecraft embrace the magic of exploration and discovery. Players will have a great time adventuring and creating in this free game update that embraces the unique and memorable elements of both franchises," he said.

The features of the mash-up were further elaborated on a press release, which further emphasized the smooth integration of Mario and Minecraft's elements.

"All the world and item textures in the game will also be redone, providing players the opportunity to create their own Super Mario-themed locations within the world of Minecraft. While building, players will even enjoy listening to the smooth sounds of 15 pieces of music from Super Mario 64. Builders of all ages will love crafting massive new worlds using building blocks inspired by a series as accessible and recognizable as Super Mario," Nintendo stated.

Those without the digital edition of Minecraft: Wii U Edition could purchase the game, with the Mario mash-up included, starting June 17, for the reasonable price of $29.99.
