In an ultimate display of the Xbox One's backward compatibility, YouTube user Vcfan posted a video showing an Xbox One console running DOSBox, an innovative emulator for old Windows applications, specifically those for Windows 95.

What's particularly interesting is the fact that Vcfan also ran one of the most iconic FPS games of yesteryear, Duke Nukem 3D. Take that for FPS nostalgia.

The fact that the Xbox One was able to run Windows 95 and Duke Nukem 3D is more than just a novelty. It is a very clear indication that Microsoft is not joking at all about developing applications that are compatible with the development of its Universal Windows Platform.

With Microsoft seemingly moving towards an era where backward compatibility is key, Windows 95 is starting to turn into the benchmark for modern devices and their capability to run old software and applications. In fact, even before seeing Duke Nukem 3D in the Xbox One, many have already seen Windows 95 running on smartwatches such as the Apple Watch and the Android Wear.

When Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One, it was branded as a console which is designed to run the latest games the world has to offer without suffering in performance. Indeed, with demanding games such as Gears of War 4 running extremely smoothly in the console, the Xbox One stands as one of the world's premier gaming systems of today.

Recently, however, Microsoft has been focusing prominently on backward compatibility, with the firm putting quite a lot of efforts to make games for its previous consoles such as the Xbox 360 run flawlessly on its newer device. The tech giant even took its efforts one step further, introducing the Universal Windows Platform, a system designed to practically unify the gaming world.

Indeed, with the introduction of UWP, as well as the efforts being put by developers into bringing yesterday's applications to today's systems, Microsoft's goal of having one unified gaming ecosystem is so much closer to reality.
