Gaming giant Nintendo has just dropped a massive clue about the firm's next generation handheld gaming device. In a Japanese financial report, the gaming firm announced that it is currently developing its next generation of gaming devices, its upcoming console, the Nintendo NX, and its next-generation handheld device, the Nintendo MH.

"The driving force up until now has been new business from health services, theme parks and mobile games etc", but will switch over to the next generation game system, NX, and next-gen handheld game device, MH, a temporary name," the financial report stated.

Of course, with news as significant as the mention of a device that has never been mentioned before, speculations about the upcoming handheld gaming device have started to emerge.

Considering that the Nintendo NX is speculated to be a console that doubles as a handheld gaming device, some Nintendo fans are stating that the MH is probably the code name for the NX's controller. This is quite in line with previous rumors which allege that the Nintendo NX would feature at least one mobile unit which would allow players to take their console games with them to the road.

However, the financial report did seem to mention that NX and the Nintendo MH as two separate devices, with the NX being called a game system and the MH being dubbed as a handheld game device. Thus, there is a very real possibility that the Nintendo MH might be the Japanese gaming company's successor to the wildly popular New 3DS.

Nintendo's DS line has been hugely successful since its first iteration was unveiled years ago. Featuring a dual-screen approach to gaming and a simple but intuitive system, the DS has become one of the most successful handhelds of all time.

As successful as the DS line is, however, it has been a while since Nintendo introduced a radical new handheld console to the market. Thus, despite the DS's popularity, an update to the gaming firm's handheld gaming console line might be in order.

If any, the news of the Nintendo MH has managed to excite Nintendo fans even further. With the Nintendo NX set to be unveiled next year, the upcoming arrival of a next-generation handheld gaming device would be a very welcome addition.

Unsurprisingly, Nintendo has been very silent since the mention of the MH. The firm has not released any further statement about the device.
