The world of gaming consoles has gone far during the past decades. As much as the industry has progressed, however, it has also gotten far more chaotic and cutthroat, with industry leaders Sony and Microsoft going blow-by-blow with their current flagship consoles, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. At the outskirts of the rivalry lies another console, however, the Nintendo Wii U, which, compared to its two rivals, is far behind in power, performance and sales.

Despite the weak performance of the Wii U compared to its predecessor, Nintendo fans were quickly enamored with the idea of another console, the mysterious NX, being developed by the Japanese gaming giant. Indeed, since the first rumors of the console emerged, fans immediately started hoping that the NX would be the saving grace of the company.

However, the Nintendo NX has been in secret development for a very long time. The little leaks that appear from time to time usually prove inconclusive. Indeed, as of writing, nothing is still known about the device, save for Nintendo's declaration that it would be redefining the gaming industry once more, quite similar to how the original Wii single-handedly changed the gaming landscape during the previous console generation.

Nintendo has already confirmed that the NX would be revealed on March 2017, in order to make way for developers to come up with games that would be optimized for the new system. As much as this is a very smart move for Nintendo, however, another dark cloud might end up emerging before the console's highly-anticipated launch, in the form of the PlayStation 4 Neo and the rumored Xbox One Scorpio.

The PS4 Neo and the Xbox One Scorpio are almost certainly devices that would offer the most cutting edge technology available today. After all, that has been Sony and Microsoft's strategy since the two firms took on the gaming industry. Nintendo, on the other hand, is a bit more unorthodox.

When Nintendo unveiled the Wii, it was far outclassed by the PS3 and the Xbox 360 in terms of raw power and performance. Yet, as sales down the years would ultimately prove, the Wii would ultimately become the champion of that era. Unfortunately for Nintendo, the follow-up to the Wii, the Wii U, fell practically flat on its face, earning just a tiny fraction of its predecessor's revenue.

Thus, with the NX, Nintendo is now in a very tough spot. Many are speculating that the NX would be far more powerful than the PS4 and the Xbox One, but considering that those two consoles are getting upgraded soon, the NX might find itself underpowered compared to the PS4 Neo and the Xbox One Scorpio once more.

If ever that happens, Nintendo could only hope that the firm would be able to recapture the magic of the Wii and the SNES once more. Considering the NX's challengers, it would have to be one unique, revolutionary device to effectively shift the gaming trend towards Nintendo.

Then again, Nintendo has always been known to pleasantly surprise gamers over the years.
