With the NX facing competition from the PS4 Neo and the Xbox Scorpio, two consoles that are specifically designed to handle VR games, rumors have emerged that Nintendo is once more attempting to dabble in the world of VR gaming.

Nintendo and virtual reality do not have a good history together. Back in the 90's, Nintendo experimented with VR technology with the Virtual Boy, a gaming system widely regarded as one of the worst systems to ever be released to consumers.

However, pressure in the form of its two biggest rivals might have been enough to change Nintendo's rather conservative stance on VR gaming. Indeed, during E3, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé all but stated that the company would abstain from VR until the technology fully matures.

"So the way we look at VR or even AR, which we do have within our Nintendo 3DS system, or us, the technology has to be at a point where it can be mainstream, then it takes content creating companies like us to really make things that the consumer wants to experience, that makes the consumer want to jump into that particular technology. That's how we move it forward," he said.

However, in light of speculations that the Nintendo NX would suffer the same fate as the Wii U by being grossly underpowered by its rivals from Microsoft and Sony, rumors have emerged that the Japanese gaming giant is once more exploring the idea of virtual reality for its upcoming console.

While these rumors could not be confirmed as of date, they do correspond well to Nintendo's statement that the NX would definitely not be underpowered. Thus, with this in mind, some Nintendo fans are speculating that the NX, if it ever does come with VR compatibility, would come with at least 4 teraflops of GPU power. Such levels of performance would be able to run VR titles pretty well, at least.

Then again, for the last two gaming generations, Nintendo has opted largely for the content over power approach. While it worked wonders for the Wii, it ultimately proved a fatal mistake with the Wii U. Thus, even with speculations that the NX would have enough power for VR titles, there is still a very real possibility that the console would indeed be bested in power by the PS4 Neo and the Xbox Scorpio.
