The Tom Cruise centric sci-fi flick Oblivion is making waves in the weekend box office.

According to EW, the film generated 13.3 million on Friday, which put it on track to net $38.2 million for its first weekend in the U.S.

Set in 2077, the story follows one of the last humans, Cruise, as he is sent to retrieve resources from a fallen Earth but discovers a disturbing secret instead, according to Variety.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the audience numbers are being delivered by adult males, who the studio reportedly targeted by sprinkling trailers through out March Madness.

Compared with the recent earnings for Cruise dominated films, Oblivion is drawing the biggest crowds since 2011's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which grossed $29.6 million opening weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, the film opened abroad last weekend and had a $75 million cushion going into the U.S. premier reports Variety.

With Joseph Kosinski at the helm, the film co-stars Morgan Freeman and Olga Kurylenko while featuring writing from Joseph Kosinski, Karl Gajdusek, Michael Arndt, and Arvid Nelson. Universal states that the futuristic flick cost $120million to make.

Based on numbers from late Sunday afternoon, Oblivion will turn a profit. Overseas viewers pulled in $33.7 million during the movie's second weekend in theaters which, combined with the last week, puts the international total alone at $112 million, reports NBC.
