Grand Theft Auto VI is arguably one of the most hyped games currently in development right now. Indeed, since the release of its predecessor, GTA V, rumors about the next title in the series have been abounding. Among these rumors is the speculation that the next GTA title would no longer be set in the United States, but rather, in another region such as Tokyo or London.

However, if Rockstar's own statements are anything to go by, it would seem that the next Grand Theft Auto title would still be definitively set in the United States. In a blog post by Yan2295, the GTA aficionado stated that former Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies himself has stated that the location of the next game is among the first things that the developers think about before starting actual work on the project.

"Where is it going to be set is the first question. Then that defines the missions; you're doing different things in LA than in New York or Miami," the former Rockstar president stated.

Benzies further stated in an interview with The Guardian that the core of the Grand Theft Auto franchise is very American, and thus, it setting the game in another country might actually be counterproductive to the overall GTA mythos as a whole.

"I think there are plenty of great stories we could tell about the UK, great environments to showcase, great gameplay mechanics that could have a UK bent to them - I just don't think it would be a GTA necessarily," he said.

"Speaking for myself - and normally I'd be as militant about saying 'we' as much as possible, because it certainly isn't only me at all, thank god - but my own personal feeling is that GTA is America."

With GTA VI almost certainly going to be set on American soil, the possibilities of yet another fictionalized American city being set as the location of the upcoming game becomes a much more realistic prospect. Fans of the franchise believe that a new city, such as a fictionalized version of Chicago or Detroit, would be a very good idea, since the area would not only offer the game a new landscape, it would also offer the title with new environments to play around with.

Rockstar has done that with Red Dead Redemption already, by presenting the Northern region as a place where violent battles in the snow take place. If Rockstar does indeed apply the same concept for GTA VI, the upcoming game would indeed be, just like its predecessors, a definitive hit.
