She's been the controversial head of the Democratic National Committee for years, but in the wake of new scandal Debbie Wasserman Schultz is bidding goodbye to her previous title.

Schultz has resigned from her post, just as the Democratic National Convention opens in Philadelphia, Penn. Here's six facts to know about her and what led to this decision.

Her Resignation Is Due To Leaked Emails

Schultz announced she would resign at the end of the convention after WikiLeaks managed to leak emails showing that she and her staffers favored Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders in the party's 2016 primary contest. The leaks caused an uproar and had many requesting she step down, especially amongst Sanders' supporters.

This Isn't The First Time This Election Season That She Has Come Under Fire

Attacks came during the primaries that suggested she had been scheduling debates and events in a way which favored Clinton over Sanders, especially after former Party Chairs Howard Dean, Ed Rendell and Don Fowler all came forward to say that they had never been consulted by her when it came to scheduling the debates.

She Was Almost Removed From Her Post By President Obama

Schultz has a history of not getting support from major party leaders, including President Obama. He even contemplated removing Schultz from her post at the beginning of his second term and replacing her with R.T. Rybak, but the plan was dropped after he became worried that dropping a woman from party leadership would send the wrong message.

She's Reportedly Tried To Abuse Party Funds

Several current and former staffers as well as others reported in 2014 that Wasserman Schultz tried on three separate occasions to get the DNC to pick up the tab for her clothes, and she used party fundraisers to hit up donors for money for her own personal use.

Wasserman Schultz Is Allegedly In Severe Debt

In 2014, she was ranked as the third poorest member of Congress with a net worth at the time of negative $972,000. Among the reasons for her net worth being so low were the combined two mortgages she and her husband were paying off, a home equity line of credit of over $250,000 and credit card debt over $15,000.

Despite The Controversy Surrounding Her, She Is Still Showing Her Vocal Support For The Party On Social Media

Even though she is embroiled in controversy, she is still making sure that voters are made aware of issues she finds with Republican Nominee Donald Trump on her social media, sharing tweets that show the lack of support for him.
