If there is one thing certain about the latest title in the successful, long-running Grand Theft Auto franchise, it is that Rockstar Games has been very tight-lipped about the project. While rumors about the upcoming game have been very notable over the years, the developer has all but confirmed one thing - GTA 6 is coming, and that's it.

With a fanbase as large as Grand Theft Auto, however, it is not surprising that numerous fan theories would emerge about the upcoming title. While the setting of the game has been up for debate for a while now, the time period when GTA 6 will take place is yet another very interesting matter.

While the latest Grand Theft Auto titles have been set largely in the present, there was once a time when the crime-simulating game explored time periods in the past. Indeed, back in 1999, not one, but two GTA titles were released, and both of them were set in a different place, at a different time.

The year of 1999 saw the release of Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 and Grand Theft Auto: London 1961. Of course, these games were but prototypes in the grand scheme of things in the GTA universe, but these two games basically prove that the franchise is open to exploring time periods outside the present.

While setting the game in the past would probably entail some limitations on what the player can do, the added character and vintage theme prevalent in such a title would undoubtedly win over avid GTA fans. In fact, if the current success of Battlefield 1 is anything to go by, setting a game in the past might very well be a lucrative idea.

Of course, these are but speculations, and it is still up to Rockstar to ultimately decide when Grand Theft Auto 6 would be set. If the next game does end up featuring a vintage theme, however, then GTA 6 might very well become the most compelling game in the highly-successful franchise yet.
