Bayern Munich destroyed Barcelona in their Champions League semi final first leg match on Tuesday night, winning 4-0. All of the goals can be seen on the video player below.
Some had touted that Bayern would be the favorites for this game, taking place in Germany and given their good form in the competition this season. Others highlighted that Barcelona, despite some poor performances this year are a team that always comes good when it matters. Star player Lionel Messi was also making his comeback from injury and many saw that as advantage to the Spanish team.
However, no one could have anticipated the score line of 4-0 in advance of the game, and it was simply breathtaking the way that Bayern locked down the usually always potent attack of Barcelona’s, while at the same time laying bare all the Spanish team’s defensive frailties.
At the end of the first half, most Bayern fans would have been delighted, leading 1-0 and blunting most of Barcelona’s attacking threat. Many had anticipated a huge pushback from Barcelona in the second half, and most German fans would have taken their team clinging on for a 1-0 win and taking a clean sheet from their home game.
However, if they were delighted at 1-0, then they were simply ecstatic with 4-0. The game is now all but over, and it would take a turn around of epic proportions and for Barcelona to do something no team has ever done in the Champions League – comeback from being behind by 4 or more goals from the first leg.
Barcelona had their usual dominant possession, claiming 63 percent of the ball, however, that resulted in only four attempts on goal all night. That statistic reveals clearly how well Bayern did at nullifying the Spanish team’s attacking might.
